A couple of years ago it seemed unreal that someone like me could learn “techy” things, yet here I am telling you how I went from financial statements to firewalls in one and a half years.

After my bachelor’s degree in Finance, I just knew that it wasn’t the right fit for me. Honestly, I never really thought much about what I wanted to do and I went for that major as a “default” choice.

I started to wonder “What else could I do?” The only interesting option for me was something in the tech field. There was one significant mental hurdle though, I believed that someone without a technical background like me couldn’t succeed in that industry especially for something as complicated as cybersecurity?

Still, I started doing some research and experimented with web development, data analysis, and even game development. I wasn’t really putting any effort, it was more like a hobby at that point.

The real defining moment happened when I stumbled upon YouTube channels like David Bombal, NetworkChuck, and John Hammond. Their videos changed my perspective and convinced me that technical knowledge wasn’t exclusive to those with traditional IT/CS backgrounds as long as one’s willing to put in the work.

With this new inspiration I set out to build a strong foundation first by learning the fundamentals. I studied networking, operating systems, security fundamentals and scripting/programming in Bash and Python. It wasn’t easy but I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it so I stuck with it.

After a few months I wanted to solidify and confirm my knowledge, I looked up the the most popular certifications for the areas that interested me and I successfully passed the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) and CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) exams the following year.

This blog is not just about documenting my journey, I want to help any way I can and connect with like-minded people. I will share the challenges I face, the victories I celebrate, the knowledge I pick up along the way and the resources that help me get better. Whether you are a seasoned professional, someone who just started, or thinking about transitioning into the cybersecurity space there is a place for you here.
